Under the direction of the Service Manager, diagnoses the causes of tractor and other equipment failures, performs the necessary repairs within the time limits established and provides guidance and on-the-job training for technicians and technician trainees. This position requires work to be completed within 100% or less of any flat rate times that are established as targets by HPC. Besides performing mechanical repair as directed, this position will entail duties which call for training of lesser skilled personnel.



  1. Repairs tractors and other equipment as directed by the service manager and as described in the work order.
  2. Supervises, instructs, trains and assists technicians in accordance with their respective abilities.
  3. Organizes and establishes priorities on the work to be performed, and assigns the work to the technicians in accordance with their respective abilities.
  4. Performs diagnostic tests to determine the cause of failure.
  5. Adheres to parts reusability guidelines.
  6. Assures that all technicians prepare their timecards, service reports and other paper work legibly and accurately.
  7. Orders parts and assists technicians to order parts in the best interest of HPC and the customer, making sure all parts that are not used are returned to the Parts Dept. for credit.
  8. Inspects all repairs in progress and on completion to assure that they have been performed correctly.
  9. Performs warranty jobs on a priority basis and assures the service reports contain all of the information necessary for filing a warranty claim.
  10. Assure that tools are not abused, are used correctly and for their specific purpose and are returned to the tool room when not in use.
  11. Adheres strictly to HPC safety, housekeeping, credit and other policies and procedures.
  12. Maintains a favorable business relationship with customers, suppliers and personnel from other HPC departments.
  13. Keeps the Service Manager currently informed on all matters of managerial importance.



  1. The candidate must possess good verbal, written and analytical skills.
  2. Preferred having a minimum of 7 years working experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy duty equipment.
  3. Good organizational skills, problem-solving abilities, time management skills and initiative.
  4. Flexibility and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  5. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  6. Must have the ability to communicate technical information as related to environmental permitting, electrical performance and mechanical system installation and operation.
  7. Must have a valid Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  8. Vision: Read paperwork, records on the computer.
  9. Talking: Communications by radio, phone and in person.
  10. Sitting: Sits at desk, equipment and vehicles. May sit for long periods of time.


TESTING REQUIREMENTS:   Applicants may be required to pass a written and/or oral examination before being considered for employment in this position.



  1. Walking and moving about on foot often through uneven terrain as well as up and down stairs.

  3. Lifting: Raises or lowers miscellaneous paperwork.
  4. Reaching: Extends hands and arms in any direction.
  5. Stooping: Bends body downward and forward by bending at knees or waist.
  6. Standing: Remains in standing position, if required to perform various functions of the job.
  7. Climbing: In and out of equipment.


  1. Noise: Works in conditions with constant or intermittent noise.
  2. Temp/Weather: Works outdoors or in open shop bay with variations of temperature and weather.
  3. Exposure: Foul odors, fumes and harsh substances.
