  • Overview

    POSITION SUMMARY:  Our tool room attendant is responsible for the overall functionality and cleanliness of the tool room. Your goals are to minimize technician preparation time for repairs by delivering tools/kits that are clean, complete, and operational in a timely manner via our Tool Watch program, managing our costs to meet metric goals, and actively contributing to the overall success of the service department. Our tool room attendant will work with a variety of people, communication skills that include strong interpersonal skills, effective writing, basic computer skills, and ability to respond to the technicians/management in a positive, caring, and timely manner is required.



    1. Cleans, Maintains, and repairs (or sends out to be repaired) service tooling to maximize availability.
    2. Checks tools/kits in/out for service department via hand held scanner.
    3. Arranges for delivery and return of service tooling for field technicians.
    4. Tags tools out of service that require repair.
    5. Maintains calibration and calibration records.
    6. Replaces barcodes when necessary for scanning in/out of tools/kits.
    7. Orders/Maintains consumable supplies and safety (PPE) for service departments.
    8. Ensures consistent organization of all tooling, consumables, PPE, and other items located in the tool room.
    9. Orders tooling/supplies from outside vendors as needed.
    10. Receives incoming materials and supplies and stores them in proper storage area.
    11. Takes/keeps inventory for tools and supplies.
    12. Contacts vendors for cost estimates, place orders, and vouchering out of vendor invoices through Hawthorne Workflow system/credit card portal.
    13. Maintains backup documentation on purchase orders, repair orders, and invoices.
    14. Orders consumables and small parts orders through DBS as needed by technicians.
    15. Collects and records (excel spreadsheet) all warranty parts turned in.
    16. Ensures organization of warranty parts in pallet crates by date for us to pull if Caterpillar calls them back for inspection.
    17. Performs additional duties as directed by service operations manager.



    1. General knowledge of basic hand tools, air tools, precision measuring tools, and reading of schematics necessary for position.
    2. This position requires the ability to provide accurate information to lead/supervisor for tool purchasing and future budgeting for tooling.
    3. Adapts to changes in the work environment; Manages competing demands; Changes approach or method to best fit the situation; Able to deal with frequent change, delays, or unexpected events.
    4. Must be able to obtain a passing score for the crane qualification test performed by a qualified Hawthorne trainer for this position.
    5. Ability to work unsupervised efficiently and be part of a team environment.
    6. Must be able to pass the Lock Out / Tag Out & Forklift certification class provided by a qualified Hawthorne trainer for this position.
    7. Performs the position with pride in professionalism while following Hawthorne’s code of conduct.
    8. High school diploma or equivalent
    9. Prefer to have one of the following
      1. Two (2) years of experience in a tool room.
    10. Possess basic computer knowledge and ability to use tool room software and Microsoft programs required in position.
    11. Must have valid California Driver’s License with a good record.
      1. Shop/Tool Room Requirements: Valid California Class “C” driver’s license.
      2. Field Requirements: Valid California Class “B” driver’s license, if assigned vehicle is required.
